Capitol Figureheads: Myth to Mortar by Chad Miller

Capitol Figureheads: Myth to Mortar by Chad Miller

West Virginia's magnificent capitol boasts worldclass architectural elements designed by renowned architect, Cass Gilert (1859-1934), also considered a pioneer of the modern skyscraper.  His numerous achievements include both the Woolworth Building in New York City and the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.  In fact, West Virginia's State Capitol, built on the same design as the U.S. National Capitol Building, stands 5 feet taller than that of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

If you visit the grounds of West Virginia's State Capitol complex, be sure to take notice of the twelve (12) mythological figureheads carved into the Indiana buff limestone which adorn the East & West interior and exterior wing entranceways to the Capitol Building.  Visit http://www.legis.state.wv.us/Educational/Capitol_History/myth.cfm to learn more about each of the carvings and their significance to the architecture and story of our state's magnificent Capitol.

You can learn more about this amazing architect at http://www.legis.state.wv.us/Educational/Capitol_History/biog.cfm .
